Als einer der größten Fans des SummerSlam 1992 bin ich schockiert, dass es so lange gedauert hat. Das Interesse an den Anmeldungen, dem Vorverkauf und allem, was passiert ist, zeigt, dass dies die größte Stadion-Show der Welt werden soll. Das will sie wirklich. Das ist so eine Sache, bei der ich als Mitglied des Kaders einen Weg finden muss, um dabei zu sein. Ich muss einen Platz in der ersten Reihe finden, denn ich habe den SummerSlam '92 so oft gesehen, dass ich den Kommentar fast wortwörtlich wiedergeben kann. Jetzt ist unsere Zeit gekommen. Es ist 30 Jahre her. Es ist unsere Zeit. Es ist an der Zeit, dass wir unseren Moment haben.
Freust du dich als eines der Gesichter des Unternehmens darauf, mit der WWE durch die Welt zu touren, und welche Orte hoffst du, besuchen zu können?
Ich freue mich sehr darauf, die Welt zu bereisen, nicht nur, weil ich die Möglichkeit habe, das Gesicht der WWE zu sein, sondern auch, weil wir zu lange voneinander abgeschottet waren. Ich bin ein globaler Sport-Entertainer. Ich mag es, überall hinzugehen. Das habe ich getan, als ich bei der WWE und außerhalb des Unternehmens war, und dann kam die Pandemie, der Lockdown, also freue ich mich darauf, überall hinzugehen, wo diese Show stattfindet. Das ist es, was du tun sollst. Man folgt seiner Show, und WWE wird in jedem Land und in jeder Sprache gesehen, und ich möchte in der Lage sein, mit diesen Leuten in Kontakt zu treten.
Hast du dir deine Rückkehr bei WrestleMania 38 schon angesehen? Wie fühlt es sich an, an diesen Moment zurückzudenken, nachdem du nun etwas Zeit hattest, ihn zu verarbeiten?
Ich habe es mir noch einmal angesehen. Ich hatte eigentlich nie vor, ihn mir noch einmal anzuschauen, weil er sich in dem Moment so gut, nein, so großartig angefühlt hat. Weil die WWE es noch einmal aufgegriffen und in Paketen gezeigt hat, und es am Tag danach auf RAW zu sehen war, und es auf eine so große Art und Weise mit dieser Rückkehr verbunden ist, habe ich es mir in seiner Gesamtheit noch einmal angesehen, und es macht Spaß zu wissen, wo ich mental war, als ich die Rampe herunterkam. Ich kenne den genauen Moment, in dem ich beschlossen habe, der American Nightmare zu sein. Das mag seltsam klingen, aber mir war nicht wirklich klar, was ich tun würde und wie ich es tun würde, bis die erste Pyroexplosion hinter mir losging. In diesem Moment wusste ich, dass wir uns auf einer anderen Ebene befinden.
Du hast erwähnt, dass dein Intercontinental Title Run eine deiner Lieblingszeiten war. Kannst du dir für die Zukunft einen weiteren IC Title Run vorstellen?
Das ist eine gute Frage. Der Intercontinental Run war für mich eine große Sache, weil ich das Gefühl hatte, dass ich dadurch in die Lage versetzt wurde, auf der Card weiter nach oben zu kommen. Ich glaube, wenn ich jetzt den IC-Titel hätte, wäre ich weniger an meinem eigenen Aufstieg auf der Card interessiert als daran, den Intercontinental-Titel auf ein Podest zu stellen. Das ist so etwas wie eine Visitenkarte von mir. Es gibt ein Sprichwort in der Branche: "Der Gürtel kann den Mann machen, oder der Mann kann den Gürtel machen". Ich weiß, dass das nicht die gängige Nomenklatur ist, die die WWE verwendet, Titel, Meisterschaft, es ist alles das Gleiche in Bezug auf das, was man damit machen kann. Ich denke, ich könnte Wunder für ihn tun. Mein Ziel ist die WWE Championship, aber es gibt viele Wege dorthin. Kein Wortspiel beabsichtigt. Wenn es über den Intercontinental Title läuft, wäre ich mehr als stolz darauf, einen der prestigeträchtigsten Titel der Branche zu tragen.
Die WWE Championship ist diejenige, die deinem Vater entgangen ist. Wie wichtig ist es für dich, dieses Vermächtnis zu erfüllen und WWE Champion zu werden?
Ich möchte nicht sagen, dass es das Wichtigste in meinem Leben ist, denn ich möchte mich nicht zu sehr unter Druck setzen. Wenn man mich kennt, und zum Glück und leider bin ich vor dem Publikum so offen und erwachsen geworden, dass sie mich wirklich kennen, dann wissen sie, dass es das Wichtigste ist. Dass der ganze Druck der Welt auf mir lastet, es zu tun. Es ist derjenige, der entkommen ist. Kein Rhodes hat es in die Finger bekommen. Ich habe es gesagt, ich habe es deutlich gemacht, und wenn es nicht zustande kommt, ist das eine Sache, aber ich konnte es einfach nicht unausgesprochen lassen. In diesem Sinne habe ich die Angewohnheit, Dinge in die Welt zu setzen, wenn es um Sportunterhaltung geht, und dafür zu sorgen, dass sie geschehen. Ich bin ein großer, großer Befürworter davon, sein Wort zu halten. Ich würde dem WWE-Universum gerne mein Wort geben, dass ich es nicht nur will, sondern auch bekommen werde. Nur die Zeit wird es zeigen.
E:WWE Clash at the Castle takes place on Saturday, September 3, in Cardiff, Wales. Are you looking forward to the first WWE stadium show in the UK in more than 30 years?
As one of the biggest fans of SummerSlam 1992, I'm shocked it's taken this long. The interest in the sign-ups, the pre-sale and everything that has happened shows that this is going to be the biggest stadium show in the world. It really wants to be. It's one of those things where, as a member of the squad, I have to find a way to be there. I have to find a front row seat because I've seen SummerSlam '92 so many times that I can play the commentary almost word for word. Now it's our time. It's been 30 years. It's our time. It's our time to have our moment.
As one of the faces of the company, are you looking forward to touring the world with WWE, and what places do you hope to visit?
I'm very excited to travel the world, not only because I have the opportunity to be the face of WWE, but also because we've been closed off from each other for too long. I'm a global sports entertainer. I like to go everywhere. I did that when I was in WWE and outside the company, and then the pandemic came, the lockdown, so I'm looking forward to going everywhere this show goes. That's what you're supposed to do. You follow your show, and WWE is seen in every country and every language, and I want to be able to connect with those people.
Have you watched your return at WrestleMania 38 yet? How does it feel to think back on that moment now that you've had some time to process it?
I've watched it again. I actually never intended to watch it again because it felt so good, no, so great in that moment. Because WWE picked it up again and showed it in packages, and it was on RAW the day after, and it ties into that return in such a big way, I rewatched it in its entirety, and it's fun to know where I was mentally when I came down the ramp. I know the exact moment I decided to be the American Nightmare. This may sound strange, but I didn't really realize what I was going to do or how I was going to do it until the first pyro explosion went off behind me. At that moment, I knew we were on another level.
You mentioned that your Intercontinental Title run was one of your favorite times. Can you imagine another IC Title run in the future?
That's a good question. The Intercontinental run was a big thing for me because I felt like it put me in a position to move up the card. I think if I had the IC title now, I would be less interested in my own rise on the Card and more interested in putting the Intercontinental title on a pedestal. It's kind of like a calling card of mine. There's a saying in the business, "The belt can make the man, or the man can make the belt." I know that's not the common nomenclature that WWE uses, title, championship, it's all the same in terms of what you can do with it. I think I could do wonders for him. My goal is the WWE Championship, but there are many ways to get there. No pun intended. If it goes through the Intercontinental Title, I would be more than proud to hold one of the most prestigious titles in the business.
The WWE Championship is the one that eluded your father. How important is it for you to fulfill that legacy and become WWE Champion?
I don't want to say it's the most important thing in my life, because I don't want to put too much pressure on myself. If people know me, and fortunately and unfortunately I've become so open and mature in front of the audience that they really know me, they know that it's the most important thing. That all the pressure in the world is on me to do it. It's the one that got away. No Rhodes got his hands on it. I've said it, I've made it clear, and if it doesn't materialize, that's one thing, but I just couldn't let it go unspoken. In that sense, I have a habit of putting things out there when it comes to sports entertainment and making sure they happen. I'm a big, big proponent of keeping your word. I'd like to give the WWE Universe my word that I not only want it, but I'm going to get it. Only time wil show.
